Windrose Gameplay Guide: 100+ Maps, Bigger Ship Quest, and Combat Tips Windrose

We spent a significant amount of time with Windrose during its beta and playtest phases, but diving into the full release on this Wednesday, April 15, 2026, has been an entirely different experience. If I’m being honest, our playtest sessions felt like a sprint, but the actual game is a marathon.

The scale of the world is the first thing that hits you. There are over 100 unique, procedurally generated maps, and the variety is impressive—no two voyages ever feel identical. However, that scale comes with a steep learning curve that we had to navigate the hard way.

The Great Dinghy Struggle

Early in the game, patience is your most valuable resource. While you’re out on the open sea attempting to finish the Bigger Ship quest, you’re stuck in a dinghy that feels agonizingly slow. It honestly feels like an eternity to transit between islands. To make matters worse, you’re constantly dodging Blackbeard’s Raiders, who seem to take great joy in sniped shots at your tiny, defenseless craft.

Combat and Chaos

The combat system is where the game gets a bit polarizing. My teammate, Mur, pointed out that the aiming mechanics can feel a bit chaotic. You’re forced to physically face exactly where you’re aiming, which can feel clunky and “eh” in the heat of a frantic fight.

The swordplay also lacks a certain snappiness. You can’t draw your blade quickly, and the game often forces you to keep re-equipping it mid-encounter. Because you can’t rapidly swing, it’s very easy to get overwhelmed by enemies, die, and find yourself staring at another long run-back.

Survival Essentials

We also learned a few “quality of life” lessons during this playthrough:

  • Gunpowder Management: Guns aren’t just “point and click.” They require gunpowder, which isn’t easy to come by. You’ll need to actively hunt down enemy sailors and loot it from them to keep your firearms functional.
  • Map Maintenance: Is your map starting to look like a cluttered checkerboard? We realized that if you have too many death markers clogging up your view, you can simply right-click them to delete them. This was a massive revelation for us after our map became almost unreadable.

Windrose is a beautiful, expansive experience, but it’s one that demands you respect its mechanics. Whether you’re a veteran of the beta or a total newcomer, keep those tents handy—you’re going to need them!
